Executive Director Hired for Cedarwood Assisted Living

FAIRBURY –Brenda Schnuelle LPN, is the new executive director for Cedarwood assisted living in Fairbury.

Schnuelle, a native of Endicott who now lives in the Diller area, has 22 years of nursing experience and more than two years of experience in assisted living. Most recently, she was director of resident care at Silver Crest assisted living in Lincoln, an 80-unit assisted living facility. Until her new office is ready at Cedarwood, Brenda’s office will be in the south wing at Jefferson Community Health Center.

“Assisted living fills a niche for those who just can’t be in their own homes any longer, but don’t need nursing home care yet,” Schnuelle said. “I’m pleased to be a part of Fairbury’s first assisted living facility, and believe we can provide a great home for our tentants.”

Schnuelle will be in charge of hiring the staff for Cedarwood. The staff will include nurses, certified med aides, housekeepers, a receptionist, and an activity director. She will be seeking applications in the near future, but does not anticipate employing staff until December.

The facility is not yet ready for public tours. Tours are expected to be available in November or December. It is anticipated that the new facility will be open for tenants in January 2004.

“As executive director, I want to make sure Cedarwood provides a great life for our tenants, a place that they can truly feel at home. It’s very important to me to make sure our tenants receive the care and service they need and deserve,” Schnuelle said.

Cedarwood will provide its tenants three meals a day, weekly housekeeping and flat linen service, medication management as needed, an emergency call system, and professional staff members to assist as needed. Scheduled transportation will be available. Utilities and cable are included, except for telephone service, which is each tenants own responsibility. Heating and cooling will be individually controlled in each unit. Free laundry facilities for tenants to do their own personal laundry are available on each floor.

Three different sizes of units will be available: a studio of about 360 square feet; a one-bedroom unit of about 480 square feet; and a deluxe one-bedroom unit of about 525 square feet. Each unit includes a private bathroom with walk-in shower; a galley kitchenette, which includes a microwave, refrigerator, sink and countertop; and generous closet space.

Prices for units will be $65 per day for the smallest unit, for an average of $1,950 for a 30-day month; $75 per day for the one-bedroom unit, for an average of $2,250 for a 30-day month; and $80 per day for the deluxe one-bedroom unit, for an average of $2,400 for a 30-day month. Double occupancy rates are also available. Basic services are included in the base rate. Additional services will be available as needed by tenants for an additional charge.

Cedarwood assisted living is a private not-for-profit organization, and is jointly owned by BryanLGH Health Services Inc. of Lincoln and Jefferson Community Health Center. It is operated by the Cedarwood assisted living board of directors, which includes an equal number of members from BryanLGH and JCHC. Bill Welch serves as president of the corporation.

Groundbreaking Held for Cedarwood Assisted Living

FAIRBURY – Ground was officially broken Thursday, Oct. 31, for Cedarwood assisted living. Dirt work for the project began in early October.

The Cedarwood assisted living project, a joint project of Jefferson Community Health Center and BryanLGH Health System in Lincoln, is expected to be completed in mid- to late-2004.

“We are very pleased to officially break ground for this Cedarwood assisted living project,” said Bill Welch, CEO at Jefferson Community Health Center. “The community of Fairbury is excited about having an assisted living facility coming, and JCHC is proud to be a part of working toward offering this service.”

Welch told those gathered that the project had been considered by the JCHC board for a number of years, and had been requested by community members. It was the partnership with BryanLGH which made the project financially feasible for JCHC and the Fairbury community.

The project, which has a total estimated cost of $4 million, is being jointly funded by the two non-profit organizations. The assisted living facility will be a separate not-for-profit entity, governed by a volunteer board. The project will be managed by Jefferson Community Health Center, and most services will be provided by Jefferson Community Health Center.

Speakers at the groundbreaking ceremony included Welch; R. Lynn Wilson, CEO of BryanLGH Health System; Craig Larmon, of Excel Development Group; and Homer Ward, president of the JCHC board of directors.

Assisted living is a special category of housing, generally utilized by senior citizens. Assisted living offers services for residents – including meals, laundry, housekeeping and medication assistance. The care provided is appropriate for people who don’t yet need nursing home placement, but need more assistance than what is available in their own home.

The new facility will be constructed on the north side of the JCHC campus. It will  include 40 living units in a two-story facility. The new facility will also include a large living area, dining area, and activities area for the assisted living tenants.

At the same time, JCHC will build a new kitchen, which will serve the assisted living, long-term care and hospital, and a new dining room for the long-term care unit.
