2006 Run, Row, Rock & Roll Adventure Race
The Second Annual Run, Row, Rock & Roll Adventure Race in Fairbury on Saturday, June 10, was a big success.
130 participants ran, canoed, biked, climbed and navigated their way through the 32 mile recreation course and the
40 mile competitive course with the help of over 50 volunteers and several hundred spectators cheering them on.
“This event has really drawn the Fairbury community together” said Craig Bontrager, Race Director and Director of the Bob
and Wauneta Burkley Wellness Center. “It seems like people come out of the woodwork
to help and participate”. People could participate in teams of three, two or individual; male female or coed.
More than 20 local residents participated in the event but contestants came from as far away as Colorado; Minnesota, Kansas
and throughout Nebraska.
Besides making their way through the course contestants also had to perform “activities” at several “checkpoints”
along the way including Target Shooting, a bicycle obstacle course, a teamwork drill, and a test of knowledge.
“I really enjoy this race, it is a well designed course in a beautiful setting” Said Scott Stopak whose team, Backwoods
Willdhares out of Omaha, won the navigational race covering the 40 mile course in 6 hours and 23 minutes.
Other teams were on the course for nearly 10 hours.
Many teams race to compete for prizes but there are also a lot who come just to see if they can complete the course.
There are always a few who find out the hard way that they cannot.
“There is something in all of us that just wants to see what our bodies can do”, said Bontrager,
“this event helps participants test their inner strength and no matter where they finish everyone gains something out of that.”
